Clark's Nutcrackers bury pine seeds in thousands of tiny caches and remember most of them for winter. The seeds they do not retrieve can germinate into the next generation of mountain forest.

WHY THIS BIRD MATTERS

A threatened tree outsources seed dispersal to a bird.

Whitebark pine cones do not open on their own, and seedlings arise almost exclusively from nutcracker caches. Blister rust, fire, insects, and climate change are reducing the cone crops that sustain this mutualism.

Whitebark pine was listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 2022. The tree depends heavily on nutcrackers; the bird can switch to other conifer seeds.

A forgotten cache can become a forest.

MEMORY NOTE: CACHE AND RECALL

The planting is accidental. The storage system is not.

A nutcracker can carry seeds in a specialized pouch beneath its tongue, distribute them across thousands of cache sites, and relocate many months later.

Whitebark pine seedlings sprout almost exclusively from those caches. The few locations a bird overlooks are the tree's route into the next generation.
