Great Bowerbird
Chlamydera nuchalis
This bird builds optical illusions for dates.
Male Great Bowerbirds arrange display objects by size, with smaller objects nearer the female's viewing position and larger ones farther away. From her viewpoint, that gradient produces a more uniform-looking scene: forced perspective built out of things a bird collected. Researchers even rearranged the objectsβand the birds restored the size gradient.

What's real?
Great Bowerbirds arrange smaller objects nearer the female's viewpoint and larger ones farther away. This schematic uses size divided by distance to demonstrate apparent size, not measurements of a real bower. Bowers are courtship structures, not nests; an illusion does not guarantee mating success.
A bower is a living part of courtship.
A display court can look like an odd collection of twigs, stones, and other objects. For a Great Bowerbird, it is part of an elaborate courtship system. BirdLife Australia's account introduces these builders and the behavior that gives their structures meaning.
A bower is not a nest or an abandoned mess to tidy up. This is a wildlife-education connection, not evidence of a population decline.
