New Guineans already avoided or specially prepared pitohuis. Field researcher Jack Dumbacher later felt burning and numbness after putting a bird-inflicted scratch in his mouth, helping set Western researchers on the trail of homobatrachotoxin in the bird’s feathers and tissues.

Choresine beetles are a leading dietary suspect for the pitohui’s toxins. Protecting the forest means protecting the inconspicuous insects and ecological relationships that make its strangest adaptations possible.

The beetle connection is compelling—and still scientifically open.
Researchers detected batrachotoxins in several Choresine beetles. They also found that pitohuis eat similarly sized insects, including one Choresine specimen recovered from a pitohui stomach.
That evidence makes the beetles a plausible direct source, but the relevant paper deliberately says putative. The chemical trail may extend farther down the food web.
