A male Kākāpō digs a shallow bowl on a ridge, inflates a thoracic air sac, and sends out a deep boom every one or two seconds. His nightly courtship broadcast can continue for eight hours, for months.

WHY THIS BIRD MATTERS

Every living Kākāpō carries a tiny conservation computer.

Each bird wears a smart transmitter that reports location and behavioral data. Ngāi Tahu, rangers, scientists, and volunteers combine that telemetry with predator-free sanctuaries, health checks, nest monitoring, and supplementary food.

Kākāpō are a taonga species to Ngāi Tahu. The recovery programme is a partnership between the New Zealand Department of Conservation and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
